For the exhibition Sporen in Ypres we created a monument for the countless women of the First and Second World Wars, the women who provided care, waited, mourned, and kept daily life running. These were women who braved the swirling dust of war yet are rarely remembered as heroes.

The artwork consists of 540 handmade scarves, a reference to the headscarves women wore when they took over factory work during wartime. Together with visitors and Ypres residents, the scarves were printed with images of hands using the cyanotype technique. Unlike a solid, static monument, the fabric’s fragility and movement remind us that care is delicate, resilient, often invisible, and constantly in motion.

Unlike the driving forces behind war, care is not about conquering or possessing, but about lovingly holding, touching, and carrying those in need.
